Dr. Ong Hui San is a Lecturer at the Perdana University School of Data Sciences (PU-SDS). She obtained her Ph.D in Computer Science from University of Malaya and holds a MSc in Molecular Biology and Bachelor of Science with Honours (Bioinformatics) from The National University of Malaysia (UKM).
Dr. Ong’s research interests are primarily in the area of functional genomics, cancer bioinformatics, and database mining, as well as the development of novel computational pipelines to solve biological problems. She also has past experience in the study of bacterial pathogenicity that centered on the use of Burkholderia pseudomallei as a model to understand the mechanism of pathogen interaction. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Ong mentored several research projects of bioinformatics undergraduate and postgraduate students at UKM.
She has authored several internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journal articles and has also presented at numerous international conferences. She has won several awards, such as the National Science Fellowship by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia (2009) and Student Travel award to attend conferences in Italy (2012) and Japan (2014) and Ph.D Thesis with Distinction (2016). Her scientific contributions include the development of novel computational tools to study the binding specificity of DNA nanostructures, and as of 2017, has 3 patent filed.
Dr. Ong will be helping the School of Data Sciences to develop research, education and services capacity in the field of bioinformatics and data sciences. Her education background in the field computer science and biology puts her in a unique position to lead these efforts.
