Dr. G. Jayakumar is an Associate Professor of Community Medicine and Director of Primary Care Clerkship at the Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine. He is also the Programme Director for the Master of Science (Public Health) course.

Dr. Jayakumar graduated from the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal in India. Subsequently, he obtained his Master of Medicine (M.Med) in Occupational Medicine as an ASEAN Graduate scholar from the National University of Singapore. He is a fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and a Fellow of the Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Malaysia. He is registered as a Public Health Specialist with the National Specialist Register and as an Occupational Health Doctor with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Ministry of Human Resources, Malaysia.

He has published numerous academic papers in local and international medical journals and has frequently presented scientific papers at national as well as at international conferences. He has co-edited two books to date.

Prior to joining Perdana University in March 2011, Dr. Jayakumar was the Chief Executive Officer of an allied health institution, Surya College at Penang which was an associate college of Vinayaka Missions University from India. His previous appointment included as an Associate Professor at the Department of Community Medicine, Melaka Manipal Medical College. Dr. Jayakumar also worked before as an Occupational Health Physician and Head of the Department of the Occupational Health, BASF PETRONAS Chemicals Sdn Bhd at Kuantan. Concurrently, he was the Country Occupational Health Physician for the BASF Group of Companies in Malaysia and for South East Asia simultaneously reporting to the BASF headquarters at Germany. His last government appointment was as an Assistant Director and head of the Occupational and Environment Health Unit at the office of the Director of Health at Melaka.

He has external academic appointments as a member of the examination committee in Ireland and as an examiner of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland for the membership examinations conducted in Malaysia. He sits as an alternate member of the of the National Conjoint Board of Public Health committee, as an appointed member of the Lawyers’ Disciplinary Committee Panel, member of the National Road Safety Council and the Editorial Board Member of Malaysian Medical Association Bulletin (Berita MMA). In addition, he is an elected Executive Council Member, College of Public Health Medicine, Academy of Medicine Malaysia and Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Malaysia.

Dr Jayakumar’s previous active involvement in professional bodies were namely as the Vice President of the Asian Association of Occupational Health, Chairman of Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Melaka Branch, Chairman of the Society of Occupational & Environmental Medicine-MMA, Council member of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health, Chairman of the MMA Committee for the Prevention of Substance Abuse and Chairman of the MMA SOCSO Committee.

In recognition for his services, he was conferred the Bintang Cemerlang Melaka (Melaka Excellence Medallion) in 2007 by his Excellency, the Governor of Melaka.
