Top 5 Distinguishing Features of a Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine Education
- A Bench to Bedside Model
Modeled after Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine will operate in connection with Perdana University Hospital, a multi-specialty teaching hospital. The connection between teaching hospital and medical school enables the efficient translation of research into practical clinical applications – taking knowledge rapidly from “bench to bedside.” - An American-style Approach
Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine's American-style approach contrasts with the British-style of medical education that predominates in Asia. In the American approach, medical students begin their training after completing a four-year baccalaureate degree (i.e., bachelor of science, bachelor of arts or the equivalent). Students are more mature upon entry to medical school, their decision to attend having been informed by years of undergraduate education and life experiences. While the four-year duration of medical education is shorter and more intense than in the six-year British system, students benefit from the breadth and depth of academic exposure during the baccalaureate years. - An Innovative Curriculum Based Upon Genes to Society
Over a period of 7 years, more than 200 faculty, students and educators at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine took part in the planning and implementation of an innovative curriculum called Genes to Society (GTS). Genes to Society was first implemented at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2009-10, for the graduating class of 2013. This 21st century approach is designed to lay the intellectual foundation physicians need in a medical field revolutionized by the Human Genome Project and by the demand to deliver individualized patient care. With emphasis on teamwork, as well as clinical immersion in the first year, Genes to Society builds an atmosphere of collegiality and collaboration among Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine students. By basing our curriculum on Genes to Society, we expect a similar atmosphere at Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine. - A Central Focus on Students
The atmosphere for students’ personal and professional development is of utmost importance in considering the design and operation of Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine. Like Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, PGSOM will divide students into colleges, where they will develop camaraderie with their colleagues and build relationships with dedicated faculty mentors. We recognize that for students to flourish as physicians, professionals and people, they need constant access to trusted mentors from whom they can learn clinical skills, model behaviors and receive career advice. - Superior Teaching
Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine's standard of excellence pervades every aspect of the institution, from the stringent requirements for admission to our expectations for student performance and our hiring and promotion of faculty. The establishment of a premier academic medical centre in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya provides a home for established professionals who are leaders in medical education, research and clinical care. Our collaboration with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will provide us with opportunities to bring renowned JHUSOM faculty to our campus in Serdang for lectureships, interim positions and permanent faculty positions.
